North Boambee Valley, Australia - February 9, 2020 /PressCable/ —
As a core part of their educational program for 2020, all four Ohana Childcare Centres on the Coffs Coast in Northern NSW Australia, will be integrating a new and exciting learning method built upon a play-based approach to teaching, that’s a whole lot more than just fun and games.
Underpinned by child development psychology and neuroscience, the Australian-designed Walker Learning method has over the past 25 years demonstrated marked improvements in the everyday literacy and numeracy skills of young children, particularly boys.
Based upon the premise that children are better able to understand if they find things more enjoyable and meaningful, this method complements the formal academic teaching through the Australian Government’s Early Years Learning Framework, already utilised by Ohana. And by helping identify a child’s interests and strengths at an early stage, the Walker Learning approach sets the child up for a smoother transition to big school.
Instead of a one-size-fits-all approach to early childhood teaching, this innovative approach seeks to value the individual and develop their cultural understanding of the world within a personalised learning framework.
The core components of the program include exploration and investigation activities, whereby children are taught to utilise problem solving, negotiation, resilience, and conflict resolution life skills.
As part of a shared learning journey, the reflection time at the end of each investigation session allows for the educators to unpack the resulting learning and link it directly back to the curriculum areas taught that day.
The Walker Learning approach requires rigour, planning, systems and understanding, and the Ohana educators are excited about implementing this framework to help boost the children’s social interaction, oral language and problem-solving skills, and improve their core academic outcomes across the board.
